마태복음 2장 1-12절 : 동방의 현자들

2:1. 이제 헤롯왕 때에 예수께서 유대의 베들레헴에서 태어나셨으니, 보라, 동방으로부터 현자들이 예루살렘에 와서

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2:2. 말하기를 “유대인의 왕으로 태어나신 분이 어디 계신가? 우리가 동방에서 그분의 별을 보고 그분께 경배드리러 왔노라.”고 하더라.

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

2:3. 헤롯왕이 이 일들을 듣고 온 예루살렘과 더불어 불안해 하며

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

2:4. 백성의 모든 선임 제사장들과 서기관들을 함께 모으고 그리스도가 어디서 태어나겠느냐고 물으니,

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

2:5. 그들이 말하기를 “유대의 베들레헴이오니, 이는 선지자에 의하여 이렇게 기록된 바

And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

2:6. ‘너 유다 땅 베들레헴은 유다의 통치자들 가운데서 가장 작지 아니하도다. 이는 너에게서 한 다스리는 자가 나와 내 백성 이스라엘을 통치할 것임이라.’고 하였음이니이다.” 하더라.

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

2:7. 그때 헤롯이 그 현자들을 은밀히 불러서 그 별이 나타난 때를 자세히 묻고,

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

2:8. 그들을 베들레헴에 보내면서 말하기를 “너희는 가서 그 어린아이에 관하여 자세히 알아보고, 찾거든 내게 다시 알려 주어 나도 가서 그에게 경배하게 하라.”고 하더라.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

2:9. 그들이 왕의 말을 듣고 길을 떠났는데, 보라, 동방에서 보았던 그 별이 그들을 앞서 가다가 어린아이 있는 곳 위에 와서 멈춘지라

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

2:10. 그들이 그 별을 보고 심히 큰 기쁨으로 즐거워하더라.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

2:11. 그들이 그 집에 들어가서 그 어린아이가 모친 마리아와 함께 있는 것을 보고 엎드려 그에게 경배하고 보물함을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드리니라.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

2:12. 그들은 꿈에 헤롯에게 돌아가지 말라는 하나님의 경고를 받고 다른 길로 고국에 돌아가니라.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

마태복음 2장은 구약성서의 예언대로 세상에 오신 예수님의 첫 장면이다.

1절에, “이제” 그리고 “헤롯왕 때에” 때와 시기는 창조주 하나님의 주권이시다.

2절에 “그분의 별(his star)" 을 보며, 동방으로부터 현자들이 예루살렘으로 온 것(1절)이다. 여기서 창세기 15장 5절에, 그를 밖으로 데리고 나가 말씀하시기를 “이제 하늘을 쳐다보고 별들을 셀 수 있다면 그 별들을 세어 보아라.” 또 그에게 말씀하시기를 “너의 씨가 이와 같으리라.” 하시더라. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

예수님은 가장 빛나는 별(star)로서 영광가운데 오셨으며, 수많은 별들(stars)을 죄들에서 구원(마1:21)하시기 위해 화평으로 오셨다.

누가복음 2:14. “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요, 땅 위에는 화평이요, 사람들에게는 호의로다.”라고 하고 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

이 별은 9절에, “어린아이(child) 있는 곳 위에 와서 멈춘지라” 여기서 “어린아이”를 원어로 보면, ‘파이디온(paidion)' 즉 “어린 아이(very young child), 유아(infant)"의 뜻이다. 다시 말해서, 갓 태어난 아기가 아니었다는 해석이다.

이는 2장 16절에 “헤롯이... 모든 사내아이를 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니라.” 의 말씀처럼 시간의 공간이 있었음을 알 수 있고, 누가복음 2장 1-38절까지의 사건들 즉, 그 시기를 보면서도 비교될 수 있었다. 특히 누가복음 2장에서는 ‘child' 단어가 아닌 “babe" 아기로 표현하고 있었다는 것이 특징이다.

본문 11절에 현자들은 “그에게 경배하고 보물함을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드리니라.” 이 세가지 영적인 의미로 보면 그리스도의 세 직분을 말하는데, 즉 선지자, 제사장, 왕을 나타낸다.

여기서, 쓴 향수인 [몰약]은 죄들을 위해 죽으러 오신 선지자를 위한 것이며,

[유향]은 분명히 금향단에서 섬기는 제사장을 위한 것이고,

[황금]은 왕의 왕관을 위한 것이다.
